Mr Hamid hadtravelled to Turkey in May last year after researching the 10-hour procedureand finding out that at just £1,500 it was £11,500 cheaper to get it done therethan at a reputable clinic in the UK.

But, the clinictook too many hair follicles out of the back of Mr Hamid's head, leaving themdamaged and less able to have a corrective procedure in the future.

Now pals havebeen joking he looks not like the Old Trafford striker Roo , 30, but more likelegendary United star Sir Bobby , now 78, who was famed for his ''comb over''hair.

He is now due toundergo another transplant procedure - but this time in the UK.

Mr Hamid, abanker, from Bury, Greater Manchester said that he first started going bald atthe age of 21, and when it was revealed Manchester United star, Wayne Rooneyhad the treatment, with successful results, he began looking into it himself.

He said:"When Wayne Rooney got it done, I looked into it and thought it was toomuch money, it was around £13,000.

"I startedlosing my hair when I was quite young, I tried many different things andnothing had ever worked - I had given up on it. At 21, to lose your hair, itaffects your confidence.

"InFebruary last year, one of my friends had it done from there, when he came backand I looked into it, it was working out at £1,500 when over here it's so muchmore.

"It'sexactly the same but because it's abroad it's a lot cheaper so I went for it.Everything seemed all right at first but for the last five months it's thinningagain.

"When youdo go somewhere like Turkey it damages your follicles in the back of your head.When they do it in England, they will do 2,000 at a time and when I had it donethey took 3,500 which was too much.

"I wasworried before I went and unsure but kept thinking about my friend and theresults he had.

"But now,if I wanted to have the treatment done again I wouldn't be able to get anotherfull transplant done because they have damaged some of my follicles. I willneed about 3,000 taken out to correct it because of the damage that has beendone."

Although thetreatment in the UK was too expensive for Mr Hamid, the £1,500 payment totravel to Turkey wasn't something he would have to save up for so he could goright away.

He said: "Ithought, 'I'll tell you what, why not, if you can sort my hair out at the sametime as a holiday, why not' it was just so cheap and that's all it was.

"I flew outthere on the Sunday and was booked in on the Monday to have it done. When Ibooked they sorted everything out, they do your transport, accommodation andtaxis, everything.

"So I wentthere and there was a ten hour procedure and once that was done I was told thatwas it and it was all done and and I stayed there for about four days before Icame back."

Despite beingable to afford the £1,500 with out any trouble at all, Mr Hamid still had hiswits about him when he was arranging the surgery.

"I'm alwaysone of them people who would never trust getting anything done abroad. If myfriend hadn't got it done there would have been no way I would have done it butafter that I thought everything had gone all right for him.

"There isno way I would have got surgery abroad, especially with my head, something youcan't really cover up.

"It's been14 or 15 months since I had the operation and I have not got the results I wasexpecting. When you get the treatment done it takes about six months for yourhair to grow and 14 months to see the full results.

"I wasquite happy with the results after 10 months but when 13 months came it startedto go thin again. It could be that it's just me that it doesn't work on becauseit did grow at first, I got some good results. My friend who got it done stillhas fantastic results.

"Itravelled with a friend when I went for my procedure, he paid for himself. Wejust went together, I wanted someone there with me I didn't want to turn up insome hospital clinic all alone. I wanted someone there with me."

Dr GregWilliams, President of the BAHRS and surgeon at the Farjo Hair Institute's HarleyStreet clinic, has warned that many countries have different regulations to theUK, with standards and safety procedures varying dramatically depending onwhere you travel to.

Hesaid: "Patients travelling overseas are often in the market for a cheapdeal at clinics where guidelines aren't as stringent as elsewhere.

"Thishas led to us witnessing some horrific results of botched surgery, includingpoor hair growth, density and direction, wide strip scars, donor site depletionfrom graft over-harvesting and in the worst cases, skin loss from necrosis.

"Cheapsurgery abroad may seem like an attractive option but, while the general costsof providing surgery may be less in some countries than in the UK, this isoften accompanied by less stringent regulations on facilities such as those bythe Care Quality Commission."
