An old fashioned table game is getting more play than ever. Mahjong is no longer for the grandmas and it's sweeping the nation.

"It's like no other game. And it's got such history, such beautiful tradition, that if your grandmother played it and then your mother played it, it's almost impossible not to want to pick up the tiles and start to play," says one mahjong addict in Louisiana.

"They chat, they bring a bottle of wine, they, you know, they're just having a really, really good time. It's the camaraderie. It's changed people's lives," says one of the aunties.

Facebook users in the comment section shared their experience with the game, explaining how the game became a foundation for family bonding as well as to keep the mind active especially for the elderly.

Not all players are women, though, as some men also learned to play Mahjong since they were young.

The fascinating, gin rummy-like game has evolved to become a popular American pastime since it was first introduced to the US in early 1920s.

According to the report, mahjong is now being played by at least half a million people in the US. That number come from the National Mahjong league, which claims to have 500,000 members.

The league serves as the arbitrator for everything that relates to the American Mahjong.

It started with just 32 members when it was founded in 1937 to standardize the game. Each year proceeds from sales of the league's official rules cards go directly to charitable organizations across the country.

In 1999, a second organization was formed, the American Mahjong Association. The AMJA currently hosts tournaments all across North America.

Every Monday and Thursday afternoon in Bryant Park, one of most illustrious public places in downtown New York City, the clink of intricate tiles and ignited outbursts from drawing an unlucky piece can only mean one tantalizing game: mahjong. Mahjongg, originated in China about 150 years ago, is a fascinating, gin rummy-like game played with tiles rather than cards. The game has evolved to become a popular American pastime since it was first introduced to the U.S. in early 1920s.

"We play with a card, a mahjong card," Linda Fisher, Bryant Park's mahjong area organizer, explained major differences between Chinese and American/Jewish style of the game.

Traditional Chinese mahjong sets have 144 tiles, while American version is played with eight additional joker tiles and score cards that are published annually by non-profit organizations like National Mahjongg League. And every year the card changes just to keep it interesting, so they have to match the patterns on the card instead of making the kinds of Pengs and Kangs and Ches that the other styles of mahjong (have). So the scoring's different.

In 1895, British sinologist William Henry Wilkinson wrote a paper which mentioned a set of cards known in central China by the name of ma chioh, literally, hemp sparrow, which he maintained was the origin of the term Mahjong.

The game was imported to the United States in the 1920s and became a success in Washington, D.C..

Also in 1920, Joseph Park Babcock published his book Rules of Mahjong, also known as the "red book". This was the earliest version of Mahjong known in America.

Many variants of Mahjong developed during 1930s. The most common form, which eventually became "American Mahjong", was most popular among Jewish women.

In 1986, the National Mahjong League conducted their first Mahjong Cruise Tournament.

Users can find information of online-playing, companions matching, strategies learning, equipment purchasing and even participating the tournaments.

International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) president Chen Zelan said his organization is conducting talks with the International Olympic Committee to feature mahjong as one of its demonstration sports last year.
